Mental Performance Series: Goal Setting

Goal setting is one of the most important tools an athlete can use to increase performance. Every athlete has a goal but the best athletes use goal setting in a systematic way to guide them to  success. An easy way to set goals is to have a big broad goal in mind which then is broken down into smaller short term goals that can be measured regularly. Below is a mental performance tool used to help athlete’s goal set:

S.M.A.R.T is a acronym used with athletes that help them breakdown goals.

Specific- Be specific about the goals that you want to set for yourself

Measurable – make sure you can measure the progress of your goal

Attainable – The goal you choose should be challenging but achievable

Realistic- the goal you choose need to be realistic to your life

Timely – It is important to set a time table to how long this goal will take to accomplish
