Mental Focus in Sports

Sports and performance psychologists, mental performance coaches and sports coaches are always looking for the best ways to help athletes perform at their peak levels when the time calls for it. A major way to impact an athlete’s performance is through concentration. Specifically, the goal is to help the athlete focus on what is important and what is not important to concentrate on.

Concentration happens when an athlete is laser focused on a target and is able to remove distractions from around that target. In order to achieve concentration the athlete must have a clear target (much like a dart player focuses on the center of a bullseye). The athlete must then move towards the target with no hesitation or second guessing. Furthermore the athlete must be self aware of the distraction issues and work towards easing these hang ups during performance. During play, an athlete must be able to retrieve concentration skills automatically during the heat of competition. Much like physical training, practicing concentration needs to be worked on as intently as working the muscles or practicing technical skills.
